Be Your Horse’s Physical Therapist

…She is a talented mare and can fake nice movement when I ride her but she is not really getting stronger. I decided to take a step back to really try to help her change her ways from the ground in hopes that she will change her posture even when I am not with her during out sessions. Through these exercises I am trying to create muscle memory for her to hold herself differently. I have taken pictures to show her at month 1 and will take pictures monthly to hopefully show a change in her posture which in turn can actually improve her conformation.

Platinum Level Trainers

Congratulations to Jacquelyn Ely and Katherine Arce. Both trainers achieved their Platinum level this summer. Jacquelyn trains her young horses in the Portuguese classical style. The shows in both USDF dressage shows and Working Equitation.

Kat trains in the classical French style, Legereté. She also believes strongly that trail riding develops a solid, dependable horse- both mentally and physically. Kat also enjoys her drill team with a collection of horse/rider partners.

Winter Training

Do you live and train in the North without access to an indoor arena? Jacquelyn Ely does too, and she is training her young filly, Vee, as well as starting her new stallion, Con. Be inspired by all she, (and you) can do outside in the winter…January was a tough month for training this year. We would often have to adapt our training based on the weather that day. I ride 100% outside with no use of an indoor at my facility. I took advantage of hacking outside the arena if the footing wasn’t great for training. Vee is coming along nicely and I am eager to start back into regular lessons in March. I decided with the dicey hauling weather to take January and February off from signing up for clinics/lessons for fear the weather would not be cooperative.

FIRST STEPS STARTING A YOUNG HORSE

Con is a 6 year old stallion with very limited handling. I found his ad on the USLF website and flew to Alabama to meet him and his younger brother in June 2021. I fell in love with Con. I was able to work with him briefly and he was so respective to my aides even with very minimal training. He had experience being led and that was about it. I knew the journey with him would not be easy and it would take a lot of time but I had a connection with him and decided to purchase him. After a few failed loading attempts Con finally made it to Pennsylvania the end of November 2021.

A Classical Approach to Young Horse Training

The Training Collaborative is fortunate to have a professional classical trainer as a member. Jacquelyn Ely, Ely Equine, L.L.C.  www.elyequine.com was trained in Portugal. Her journal demonstrates how a consistent, classical approach will yield a solid foundation when bringing a young horse under saddle. Jacquelyn joined the TC with her 2 year old filly, 116 Valdamora X in 2020. In just two years, the partnership has come far! They have competed in a dressage schooling show and working equitation. Currently Jacquelyn has introduced her young mare to lateral work and rein back.
